Australian Fund Monitors (AFM) provides a range of services for, and information on the Alternative, Absolute Return and Hedge Fund industry in Australia. As the name suggests, we focus on what’s happening in Australia and monitor both the industry, managers and funds either operating from or available in Australia.
AFM provides access to information through this website for wholesale investors or advisors, and monitors over 400 funds. The broad scope of this information covers basic information on managers and the funds they manage, and as such is broadly quantitative both from a performance, risk and operational perspective.
More detailed information is provided in Fund Reviews which is gathered on those funds which meet what we perceive to be acceptable risk adjusted returns. We are frequently reminded of the words of Harold Geneen, the former CEO of IT&T who said: “words are words, and promises are promises, but only performance is reality.” Using this mantra as an initial screen, a full analysis is conducted on a fund’s investment and risk processes, followed by Operational Due Diligence aspects of the manager’s operations along with analysis of the fund’s terms, conditions and non market risk.
Frequently what seems “normal” on the surface transpires to be less so when the lid is lifted and the pot stirred. Although we focus strongly on hard facts and figures, at the end of the day experience and intuition come into play when we ask ourselves the question “does this manager consider managing other people’s money an opportunity, or a responsibility?”
Australian Fund Monitors was established in 2006 by C.E.O. Chris Gosselin who has over 25 years experience in financial markets in Australia including managing the Melbourne office of Macquarie Equities in the late eighties, before establishing InfoChoice Ltd in 1993 to provide financial information and distribution on the banking sector.
